About Ischia Bravo

Ischia weathered the storm of a challenging high school career, family hardships, and community turmoil to earn her GED and head to Hostos Community College for her Associate’s Degree. While there, she worked several jobs in order to help her grandmother meet the gaps that public assistance could not fill for her family. She later continued her education at John Jay College.

Her passion for service became evident early on in her collegiate career, and she was elected President of Student Government at Hostos Community College in recognition of her advocacy. Ischia used her own life experiences to mold her approach to many of the situations faced by the student body. Years of volunteer community outreach for the Latino Commission on AIDS also guided her perspective on service to her community in the Bronx.

Ischia would continue her career in public service by joining the staff of Congressman Jose Serrano, who represents the poorest Congressional district in the United States; which includes the South Bronx. As the Community Liaison for Housing and Events, Is chia learned firsthand how important the issues of housing equality and community empowerment were with the residents of the district.

Later, she would serve State Senator Jose Serrano Jr. as District Manager for the 28th Senate District, encompassing the South Bronx and parts of Manhattan. There, she continued to work with residents to help them secure access to government resources and work together for the good of the district.

In the fall of 2008, Ischia was hired as the Executive Director for the Bronx Democratic County Committee. Under the leadership of then-Chairman and current New York State Assembly Speaker, Carl Heastie, Ischia helped guide The Bronx Democratic organization as a beacon of Democratic principles to the rest of the city, state and nation.

Ischia has helped facilitate the election of many elected officials who have gone on to serve The Bronx in an upstanding and noteworthy fashion, and helped secure the largest total victory in any United States county for President Barack Obama, in both, 2008 and 2012.

Throughout her career in public service, Ms. Bravo has assisted in numerous events, including toy drives, food drives for the homeless and hungry, clothing drives and others. She has also served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for President Barack Obama in 2012.

Ischia understands the challenges we face as hard working mother and wife. She is raising her 2 boys in the Grand Concourse section of the district. Manuel is 8 years old and Zachariah is 1 years old.

Ischia currently serves as a member of Community Board 7 and 52nd Precinct Council, which includes the communities of Bedford Park, Fordham, Jerome Park, Kingsbridge Heights, Mosholu Parkway, Norwood and University Avenue.
